Title: Behind Closed Doors
Author:Carol Wyer
Genre: Mystery & Thriller
My Rating:
Source: ARC
Synopsis:
Two kidnappings, thirty years apart. Can Stacey face her own dark past in order to save her stepdaughter?
When Stacey’s ex-husband turns up on her doorstep begging her to help save his kidnapped thirteen-year-old daughter, Lyra, the terror is all too familiar. Stacey’s own violent kidnapping thirty years ago was never solved, and while a severe case of amnesia spares her from recalling the specific horrors, she remembers enough…
Stacey knows her father never paid the ransom—she has the missing pinkie finger to prove it. She knows she was only saved because of an anonymous tip-off to the police. And she knows her captor was never apprehended.
Lyra’s kidnappers have made it clear the police must not get involved. But Stacey can’t shake the eerie similarities between the two cases, and she’ll use whatever she can, from her journalistic powers to her shady contacts, to save Lyra from the same nightmare. Desperate to find any link between Lyra’s abduction and her own, Stacey forces herself to revisit her forgotten, traumatic past for clues.
But can she make sense of the terrible secrets she unearths in time to save Lyra? And if she does, is she ready to face her own tormentor?
My Review:
I’d like to thank Zoe from Zooloo’s Book Tours for contacting me to be involved in this blog tour. I have read and loved previous books by Carol Wyer before and jumped at the chance to be involved in this one.
Well this was certainly a page turner! From the moment Stacey learns that Lyra has been kidnapped a million and one theories ran through my head and I felt that I couldn’t put the book down until I found out the answer. Stacey immediately becomes fixated on solving the mystery surrounding her own kidnapping thirty years ago and some might say she was making unnecessary conclusions. How could a kidnapping from thirty years ago possibly be linked to the kidnapping of her step-daughter?
Things between Stacey and Jack, her ex husband, were vey strained and it was clear that Stacey didn’t trust Jack, she often questioned his actions. They had one thing in common though and that was to get Lyra home safely. The thought of what Lyra was going through made them work as a team and with the help of a few friends in the field, they started to work on their investigation.
As the day progress and ransoms are demanded Stacey starts to feel there may be more to this disappearance than she initially thought. This sets her on a journey to recover her lost memories from her own kidnapping. I found this part of the story absolutely fascinating, it demonstrated just how clever the brain is in what it can conceal and remember.
This was a slow-burn thriller that packed a punch towards the end. As Stacey’s memories resurface we are dealt revelation after revelation which shocked me! You can understand why Stacey left those memories well and truly buried but the icing on the cake, for me, was finding out where Lyra was and who had abducted her, even the final page left me reeling! I can’t say much more than that but trust me, you need to read this book!

Don’t forget to check out the other stops on the tour!

Hi Lucy,
I wanted to leave you a message to say a huge thank you for your amazing review and to thank you for being part of the tour. I’m delighted that you enjoyed the book, especially as it was a standalone thriller and not my usual police procedural/crime.
If you have a moment, I’d really appreciate it if you could copy this ace review to Amazon. I would love other readers to be able to read it. (Apologies if you have already done it, – I didn’t spot it this morning, but in my defence I was bleary-eyed!)
Thank you too for sharing the book love… without you and others like you… I would have no readers – you are the best!
Carol xoxo
