Hello bookworms and welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This week’s topic is: Bookish Pet Peeves
I’m sure every bookworm can think of one or two!
1. Talking to me when I am reading
This has got to be my number one pet peeve! Honestly if I’m sitting with a book the worst thing for anyone to do is sit down next to me and start a discussion. Can you not see that I am reading? My husband will admit that he is the worse for doing this and sometimes I think he does it on purpose just to wind me up.
2. Having books in different formats by the same author
Okay so this is when everyone realises just how OCD I am about my book collection. If I like an author and start collecting their books then I like them all to be in the same format. For instance I have all of Jodi Picoult’s books in hardcover but I’ve been collecting M.J. Arlidge in paperback. I’m not fussed on a specific format but I like to stick with one for each author. I find hardcovers are the harder ones to do because they are only available for a certain amount of time.
3. Stickers on books!
Do I really need to say anymore? I can’t stand trying to remove the stickers and finding that horrible residue is still on there.
4. When books are turned into movies and they change something significant
If I’ve read a book, loved it and then find out they are making a movie of it part of me is always nervous that it will be terrible. My main example of this is My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. I loved the book and was very excited to watch the film but I ended up crying tears of anger because they took what was a knock you sideways ending and changed it to something worse. To this day I have not watched that film again.
5. Cliff hangers at the end of a book and you have to wait for the sequel
I’ve learnt the hard way that sometimes it’s better to start a series when a few of the books are out. I hate the cliff hangers that are sometimes left and it kills me to know the next book is a year away!
6. When publication dates are changed
I know it can’t be helped but I like to plan my reading around the books that are due for release. It gets very frustrating when I log onto NetGalley and realise that a books publication date has been brought forward and I hadn’t realised.
7. When someone spoils the ending
It’s always great to talk to fellow book lovers and friends about books but I hate it when people spoil the key events in my upcoming read. As a reviewer I try really hard not to reveal spoiler as it’s those moments that leave us with a lasting impression of a book.
8. People not returning borrowed books
I am very and I mean very careful about the books I lend out and stick to fellow book lovers and immediate family. I cherish every single one of my books and I have learnt the hard way that not everyone feels the same about them.
9. People that say reading is boring
I completely understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and not everyone will share the same enthusiasm as me for reading. What really gets my goat though is the people who tell me that reading is boring but haven’t picked up a book in years! How could they know that reading was boring if they haven’t even tried it? That’s like me saying golf is boring despite only playing it once in my life. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it folks!
10. When you’re out and about and realise you’ve left your book at home!
This has happened on a few occasions and its so frustrating. I normally carry a book with me everywhere I go just in case I’m stuck waiting and have a few minutes spare to do a little cram reading. You can always guarantee that when I don’t have my book I have the longest delays. I have resorted to reading on my phone which isn’t ideal but a least I get a few more pages in.
What would be on your bookish pet peeves list? I’m sure I’ll be reading everyone else’s list and see a few I wish I had included.
