Buddy Reads Update

Hello bookworms,

Today I thought I would take some time to chat about buddy reads. I may be a little late to this party but I have only started taking part in buddy reads this year. What’s a buddy read I hear you ask? For those that have been out of the loop, like myself, a buddy read is when you and a friend(s) read a book at the same time and stop at points to discuss the book.

For me the next best thing to reading is talking about what I’m reading so this sounded like my kind of read. Whilst I’ve been taking part in the monthly read for my book club my main source of buddy reading has come from my good friend Meg Readz. I have actually known Meg for quite a few years now, actually over a decade if I’m being accurate! Meg, her sister Emmie and their mum Clare are great friends of mine and it has been great to read and talk about some of my reads with them this year.

As we are over half way through I thought I would take a look back on the books we have read, as well as our ratings to see which ones we enjoyed the most. So here we go….

The Paris Library

Lucy’s Rating

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Meg’s Rating

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This was our first read of the year together, we both enjoyed aspects of it but it didn’t blow us away.

The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot

Lucy’s Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Meg’s Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Clare’s Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

We all fell in love with this book. We still talk about it now and as soon as one of us mentions Humphrey we all well up!

The Frequency of Us

Lucy’s Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Meg’s Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Clare’s Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Another stellar read for us. All the way through we had different theories running through our minds, it was such an unusual read.

The Dictionary of Lost Words

Lucy’s Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Meg’s Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Clare’s Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This was a slow burner read that told Esme’s story beautifully. As huge fans of the Suffragette Movement we were instantly caught by the synopsis and it didn’t disappoint.

The Metal Heart

Lucy’s Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Meg’s Rating

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Clare’s Rating

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This was a book that had us divided as readers. There were elements that we liked but overall there were a lot of inaccuracies that we couldn’t get past. I enjoyed the relationship between the two sister and the dramatic ending saved it a little more.

Madam

Lucy’s Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Meg’s Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This was darker than our usual read and it was a book that haunted you long after you had read it. We enjoyed the feminist stories that were injected throughout and thought the whole book had a very gothic feel to it.

Mrs England

Lucy’s Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Meg’s Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Clare’s Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This was another hit with all three of us. We loved the historical story and not knowing what was going to happen. The final revelations had us gripped and we had great fun discussing the book club questions at the end of the book.

The Lucky List

Lucy’s Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Meg’s Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Clare’s Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Meg and Clare actually introduced me to Rachael Lippincott as they have enjoyed her previous books a lot. This one had all of the emotion and all three of us needed tissues for the ending.

I think what I have loved most about these buddy reads are the zoom calls with cups of tea and cake to discuss what we loved or didn’t love about the books. I felt that as a reader I understood the book more and in turn it helped to make my reviews better. Clare and Meg have been amazing reading companions and I’m excited to see what we read next!

If you haven’t tried a buddy read then I would highly recommend it!
