Title: The Existence of Amy

Author: Lana Grace Riva

Genre: Fiction

Goodreads Rating: 3.88

My Rating: 4*

Source: Paperback

Synopsis:

Amy has a normal life. That is, if you were to go by a definition of ‘no immediate obvious indicators of peculiarity’, and you didn’t know her very well. She has good friends, a good job, a nice enough home. This normality, however, is precariously plastered on top of a different life. A life

My Review:

I was very excited when I was contacted by the author to review her book. The majority of books that I receive are e-books so to get a physical copy was amazing! As a self published book I wasn’t sure what to expect, the synopsis didn’t give too much away and if the author hadn’t of contacted me I doubt I would of ever heard about the book.

From the start you know that Amy is suffering with some sort of mental health issue and whilst it isn’t named until the end, throughout the book her condition becomes clear. The author explores the issue of mental health and exposes what it is like for an individual to not only live with but conceal it from everyone.

Whilst Amy is the main character I found that I had a particular fondness for Ed and Nathan. These two characters are Amy’s saviours and anyone going through similar issues could benefit from having friends like these. There were plenty of times when I wished Amy had said out loud what she really thought to a lot of people, but mainly to these two characters. If more people in the world were like Nathan and Ed then maybe less people would conceal their health issues.

This was a really easy read, it just seemed to flow well and before I knew it I was over half way through. Perhaps this was because of the short chapters? My only niggle would be that I would of loved to of known more about Amy’s life before she developed these health issues. It is touched on every now and again but to of read how her whole life started to spiral would of made the book even better, in my opinion.

This is a great book and I am really happy that the author contacted me otherwise it might of passed me by. I’m very excited to see what Lana Grace Riva does next.
